Joe the Turk

Apr 4, 2024 | by Guy Nickum

Joe the Turk was a Salvation Army officer who had a fascinating life story. He immigrated to America from Turkey during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 and settled in San Francisco. There, he witnessed the persecution of the Salvation Army and was converted at one of their drum sessions. He became an officer himself and fought for the freedom of religious speech, winning the right for the Salvation Army to preach on street corners across the United States.

Joe was known for his colorful uniforms, songs, and storytelling, and his story is presented in a show called "The Turk: Sanctified, Salvationist Showman". This show aims to entertain, inspire, and challenge its audience to stand for Christ no matter the cost and proclaim the good news that Jesus saves.
